The Nobel Prize

Observations on sex and continent distribution over almost 120 years.

The Nobel Prize attributes annual awards in 6 categories: Chemistry, Economics, Literature, Medicine, Peace, and Physics. As women's contributions are slowly getting more recognition in these fields, can we observe a similar gender attribution trend of the Nobel Prize? Moreover, the United States appears to be the country winning the most awards in recent history. But was it always the case? These are some of the questions that motivated the creation of the following visualization. Explore it to find answers and much more!

  • Full-discloser: This visualization's layout is very strongly inspired by the project Olympic feathers by Nadieh Bremer. I built this project to learn d3.js, and Nadieh's code has been beneficial in the process.
  • The original dataset, covering Nobel prize winner from 1901 until 2016, can be found on data.world.
  • I manually added the data for 2017 to 2019.
